227. The goddess (1960)

Country: India
Directed by Satyajit Ray

Mesmerizing and haunting 'The goddess' is a film that seems to oppose religion and superstitions but in reality doesn't destruct them at all as it is full of mysticism: at almost every plan, we realize that these anachronistic beliefs are an important part of the Indian identity. Ray respects their powerful presense, the deep root that they have in the Indian soul and portayed them as sacred rather as comicals mambo jambos ( I dont know if censor played some part on it). Needless to say that even the film is not a major masterpiece, the personal style of Ray makes it outstanding to watch, notably powerful
