45. The insect woman (1963)

Country: Japan
Directed by Shohei Imamura

The protagonist of the film is not a offender nor a victim : she is a dialectical being that acts as an insect , using her instinct, far from classifications of good or bad . Her life story is presented with a bold way without to any idealization or intention to sugar the pill. But is not only the female character that portrayed with a complexity that the Japanese audience rarely seen before. With the 'insect woman', once more, Imamura breaks in pieces the stereotypical way that people, social classes and history used to be presented in Japanese cinema.
