47. The pickpocket (1997)
Country: China
Directed by Jia Zhangke
The every day life in a small Chinese town that is hard , meaningless and boring . The solitude as 'a substitute for dignity'. The alienation of a street thief that refuses to adjust himself to the 'normal' as everybody else does. Jia Zhangke in his first movie, with amateur actors , camera on hand and natural sound, captures with extreme accuracy the feeling of living in contemporary China . Dirty streets, public baths, karaoke bars that in reality are brothels, bicycles, open air pool tables, people who smoke like maniacs are portrayed in the movie with a direct documentary style that probably was never seen before in Chinese cinema
You can watch the full movie here but unfortunately without English subtitles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWpPaVnnfGs
