52. Sepet (2004)
Country: Malaysia
Directed by Yasmin Ahmad
Probably it looks a bit commercial as a concept: one more movie that narrates , at times as a comedy at times as melodrama, the love story between two cute people that face social obstacles in order to be together. The movie has a straight plot line, is easy to watch by anyone and is not surprising that was a major hit financially in Malaysia. However, 'Sepet' puts in table much more things than romanticism : apart that presenting the every day life in Malaysia and the social environment with accurate way, the movie contains a lot of comments about ethnic diversities, stereotypes, social classes, religion barriers , trends. At the end is love - not only the couple in love but anyone in the movie is lovable- that unify all these different elements of a country that Yasmin Ahmad presents with tenderness
